Invincible clubs like Arsenal, Celtic, Falkirk and Bayer Leverkusen

Invincibles debacle

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann caused a bit of a stir yesterday with his revelation that sides such as our own can’t use the tag of ‘invincibles’ due to his ‘acquisition’ of the term.

The German keeper was part of the superb Gunners side who won the EPL in 2003/04 after going through the entire season unbeaten in the league. Now he’s stunned everyone including his old side by snapping up the rights to the term and has threatened them or anyone else who has the nerve to utter the word.

Legal ramifications

There could well be legal ramifications if anyone dares use it, but how petty must Lehmann be to threaten such action?

Other sides can also lay claim to be ‘invincibles’ for past or present feats, but focusing solely on our own side, we have a more solid claim as we went through an entire domestic season unbeaten as we won a historic treble in 2016/17.  Celtic are Treble Winning Invincibles, something that Lehmann and his 2003/04 teammates couldn’t achieve.

Proper Invincibles

Can Jens say the same about his Arsenal side in that 2004/05 season? Nope or course he can’t. Or what about the current Bayer Leverkusen side who are only a few game away from going through an entire campaign unbeaten in every competition. Now that would be proper Invincibles, of if you like Invincibles of the invincibles, sorry Jen.

Whatever Jens may threaten, for me our side of 2016/17 will always be the invincibles, just as the Arsenal side of 2003/04 will always be. One man doesn’t own that term, no matter what the courts may or may not say.

Supporters of the sides who have achieved that feat can lay claim to the term as much as anyone else whether that’s Arsenal, Celtic, Falkirk or Bayer Leverkusen.
