Welcome news on Celtic’s reported goalkeeper and defensive targets this morning…
Replacing Joe Hart will be no easy task. Celtic has been linked with several keepers since the end of the season, but nothing concrete and the ones that we’d like all seem unrealistic to say the least.
Jensen is highly rated
Last night however we were linked with Danish shot stopper Peter Vindahl Jensen who plays for Czech side Sparta Prague. There seems to be some substance to the reports, and talks are reportedly ongoing.
Jensen is highly rated and has all the credentials to replace Joe Hart. The Dane is a tall commanding keeper and a decent shot stopper, and at 26 he has his best days ahead of him.
He won’t come cheap though with a fee of around £6-£7 million being quoted. That’s a lot of money for a keeper, but one we can realistically afford, although the memory of the £5m wasted on Vasilis Barkas remains a cautionary one to bear in mind.
Serious interest in Bournemouth defender
The club have also been credited with a serious interest in Bournemouth defender Chris Mepham, a former teammate of Cameron Carter-Vickers.
The Welsh international is also valued at around £7 million, again a fee we can afford. If that’s the calibre of players we are taking a serious interest in then we should all be optimistic about the season ahead.
Celtic should have scope to negotiate on both fees, the Bournemouth defender for example is entering the final year of his contract and last season struggled for game-time.
Ambition
Not only because the calibre of player, but it shows that we intend to spend some serious money and back Brendan in his quest for further success.
Our squad is clearly in need of upgrading and by targeting players of this quality, it shows we still have the ambition to take the necessary steps needed to achieve that goal.
Photograph with a curious Celtic story
Incidentally, the header photograph shown above features a current Celt, Cameron Carter-Vickers, a reported Celtic target in Chris Mepham and a former Celt Stuart Armstrong who has come to the end of his contract at Southampton and is a free agent, causing speculation that Brendan Rodgers might be interested in a re-union with one of his Invincible Celtic stars.
