Former Celtic midfielder lined up for Serie A move despite promotion

Former Celtic favourite Stuart Armstrong is in line to make a switch to Serie A despite Southampton earning promotion. The 32-year-old’s contract at St Mary’s has expired and despite Russell Martin wanting to sign him on a new deal, there is interest from elsewhere.

As reported by Record Sport, Armstrong is wanted for a switch to Italian side Fiorentina with Fulham also interested.

Celtic sold Armstrong in the summer of 2018 in a deal worth in excess of £7m. The departure was inevitable as Armstrong clearly wanted to have a crack at the Premier League. If he does move on this summer, Celtic will miss out on the sell-on fee included in the deal to sell him to the South Coast side.

Armstrong was a top player for Celtic, really kicking on under Brendan Rodgers and helping Celtic towards a Double Treble. After signing alongside Gary Mackay-Steven, Armstrong went onto make 144 appearances for Celtic, scoring 28 times and racking up 25 assists.
