Former Celtic midfielder leaves role with Shaun Maloney for Bolton gig

Former Celtic midfielder Stephen Crainey has opted to leave Wigan Athletic to take up a role at Bolton Wanderers. The 43-year-old has been Assistant Manager to former Celtic teammate Shaun Maloney but he has now opted for a relatively local move, joining Bolton.

Bolton and Wigan have agreed a compensation package has been agreed that will allow Crainey to join Bolton as the club’s new joint-assistant manager. The move reunites Crainey with Bolton boss Evatt, who he played alongside at Blackpool.

Crainey made 58 appearances for Celtic after coming through the club’s Academy. The Glaswegian then moved to England, where he enjoyed a successful playing career with spells at Southampton, Leeds and Blackpool.
