Celtic interested in 35-year-old Premier League goalkeeper

Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka as the club continue to search for Joe Hart’s replacement.

After the Englishman decided to hang up his gloves at the end of the last campaign, supporters knew that speculation would be rife around who would step into the void vacated by Hart.

Now, Record Sport are reporting that Celtic have registered an interest in the Slovakian Internationalist. Dubravka looks set to be moved down to third choice at St James’ Park with Trafford set to arrive to deputise to Nick Pope, meaning that the 35-year-old would find himself operating as a training goalkeeper if he were not to move on.

No.2 to Pope

Despite being No.2 to Pope, the goalkeeper made 30 appearances last season but it was clear this summer that Eddie Howe was targeting a second goalkeeper with Dubravka able to move on given that he has one year remaining in his deal.

Dubravka will turn out at Euro 2024, which will likely entice him to potential suitors. However, Dubravka turns 36 in January, meaning he is probably a little old for Celtic’s model. If they were to do that, someone like Fraser Forster would surely be as (if not more) attractive.

Celtic have been linked with a number of goalies as the manager looks to bring in a shot-stopper with the ability to play with the ball at his feet. The task of replacing Celtic’s Super Joe Hart will be sizeable so the club need to get it right.
