James Forrest has more than earned his place in the Scotland squad…
This isn’t a case of Steve Clarke picking James Forrest because he’s one of ‘the old boys’ which the Scotland manager often gets accused of. Between a horrendous injury list and a clear lack of depth and quality up top, it’s simply a no brainier to pick someone as talented and experienced as the in-form Celtic winger.
Scotland squad for Euro 2024 includes four Celtic stars
Steve Clarke named his 28 man provisional squad for the Euros today and no fewer than four Celtic players made the cut. The squad will be cut to 26 in early June with injuries likely to determine who drops out.
The likes of Anthony Ralston, Greg Taylor and Callum McGregor were expected to be picked, but there was the surprise inclusion of the born again James Forrest. When I saw surprise I’m referring to James coming back into the Scotland set up after several years when he has not featured.
Steve Clarke is not a man to look a gift horse in the mouth
James Forrest had been touted for a place in the squad due to his terrific end of season form, but there was still a chance his good form would be ignored. However Steve Clarke is not a man to look a gift horse in the mouth. He must have been as impressed as the rest of us by Forrest’s recent form at Celtic. That’s why he has included the 32 year-old Celtic winger in his squad that’s heading for Germany.
James Forrest is there on merit
Make no mistake, James Forrest is there on merit. His excellent Celtic form has earned him this one last chance on the big stage, and no one can deny him this final opportunity. Well done Jamesy and the other three Celts heading to Euro 2024.
