Supporters of numerous clubs around Scotland are against Willie Collum’s appointment as new head of Scottish referees because he’s regarded as being useless, however theRangers supporters are against his appointment because of Collum’s religion.

    Much maligned whistler

It’s fair to say that the appointment of Willie Collum as head of referees in this country caught everyone by surprise. When it was announced yesterday the majority of football supporters just shook their heads in collective disbelief as the much maligned whistler was being handed the top job.

Collum is as incompetent as they come. He’s quite frankly a rubbish referee and one of the worst of a very bad bunch. There’s not a club he’s not upset during his long career as a referee, so at least he’s been consistent!

    Sinister sectarian undertones

Most football supporters in Scotland will acknowledge that he’s not a good referee, but as for theRangers supporters, their rage at his appointment has much more sinister sectarian undertones.

Many of them (not all them) dislike the whistler solely because of his religious beliefs. That’s not a wild claim that’s a fact, as a quick scroll through X, Facebook or their horrible leading forum will show you.

    Scotland needs to move on

Collum is a high profile Roman Catholic and has never hidden his beliefs and nor should he. Yet these supporters of theRangers can’t abide to that, and their constant attacks on him are mainly down their sectarian views. It’s pretty obvious to everyone.

How dare a Roman Catholic get a high profile job in this country eh? Collum might be useless but his religion shouldn’t be the reason his appointment is under scrutiny. And in 2024 it is a disgrace that it is? It doesn’t happen in England, or Spain, or Germany or Sweden or France so why does this still happen in Scotland?
