Being ‘offered’ players is never a good sign

The season might still be in play, but that hasn’t stopped transfer speculation starting to be reported.

Apparently Celtic have been ‘offered’ the services of Cremonese midfielder Charles Pickel. The Swiss born Congo international has apparently been touted to Celtic according to ‘sources’ as reported by Football Scotland.

I know nothing about Pickel

Firstly like most of you I know nothing about Pickel apart from that he currently plays for Serie B side Cremonese and he’s a DR Congo international. He could be a decent player and plays in a position that we badly need reinforcements in, but what has me worried is the word ‘offered’.

He is under contract until 2026 so the fact that he’s been touted for a move isn’t reassuring. I mean good players don’t get offered out. For instance we offered the services of Alexandro Bernabei and Mikey Johnston to interested clubs, as both were deemed surplus to requirements as they clearly aren’t making the grade.

Surplus to requirements

So what makes Charles Pickel any different? If he’s seen as surplus to requirements at a side who currently sit fourth in Italy’s second tier, is he any good for our ambitions moving forward?

Agents leak these stories to drum up interest. Celtic transfer stories get plenty of attention. Then there’s the one the Scottish media likes where theRangers are set to swoop in and beat Celtic to the signing and suddenly the player will elevated to world class status, until they see him play.

This one is not worth getting in a Pickel over.
