Colby Donovan could complete another significant step in his rapid development by making his senior Scotland debut during the international break. The Celtic academy graduate was included in Sébastien Pocognoli’s first Scotland squad after establishing himself as a genuine first-team option at Parkhead.

Donovan is one of five players receiving maiden senior call-ups, alongside Robbie Ure, Luis Binks, Josh McPake and former Celtic defender Stephen Welsh.

New boss Pocognoli has made clear that selection will be determined by his intended footballing identity.

“For me, the most important is regarding the style of play I want to produce on the pitch,” the Scotland manager said.

“My focus is to select the players regarding this.”

Kieran Tierney will not be involved as the Celtic fullback was forced to withdraw through injury. It remains to be seen what knock he has picked up as his minutes have been well managed since he returned to Celtic.

Scotland begin their Nations League programme against Slovenia on Saturday. This was the scene of Gordon Strachan’s last game as Scotland manager and it sets the scene for the new regime under the Belgian coach.
