The Dane was back at Celtic Park on Wednesday night as a TNT Sports pundit as Martin O’Neill’s side secured an impressive 3-0 victory over LASK in the first leg of their Champions League play-off.

Schmeichel, who was forced into retirement through injury earlier this year, enjoyed a light-hearted exchange with his former boss after the match.

But he also found time for a cheeky Rangers dig while discussing the renewed positivity surrounding Celtic this season.

Asked about the mood around Celtic Park following the difficulties of last campaign, Schmeichel said on TNT Sports: “The most important thing is this place. It’s the unity.

“Last year, there were a lot of things going on off the field. As a player, it was really uncomfortable. You really struggled with it.

“But this season, it seems like there’s not any issues off the pitch. It’s been nice and quiet. They’ve done their business, they’ve got into the season really well, had some good performances.

“It always helps that the team across the road aren’t doing too well…

“That’s all a part of being a part of Celtic Football Club. So they’re in a really good place, but the next game is massive now.

“The first goal in the next game… they get that, they kill the tie completely.”
