Julian Araujo is set for another lengthy spell out after Bournemouth confirmed the defender has undergone an operation following a fresh thigh injury suffered during pre-season.

Julián Araujo has undergone successful surgery on his left thigh after sustaining a muscle injury on the club’s pre-season tour in Austria.

He will be supported by the club’s medical department as he navigates a period of rehabilitation.

The Mexico international’s previous campaign was also disrupted by a quad problem, with the issue bringing his loan spell at Celtic to an early conclusion after just 13 appearances.

With another rehabilitation period now ahead of him, any hopes of Araujo returning to Celtic before the transfer deadline appear to have been effectively ended.

The setback comes as a major disappointment for the full-back, who quickly won over the Celtic support during his time in Glasgow despite featuring for only part of the season.

Bournemouth announced on Thursday that the procedure on Araujo’s left thigh had been successful after he picked up the injury while away with the squad at their Austrian training camp.

Reports linking the 24-year-old with a second spell at Celtic have continued since the end of last season, with Araujo previously adding fuel to the speculation himself.

Following his farewell appearance for the Hoops, Araujo’s cousin hinted on social media that a permanent move could still materialise, before later travelling to Glasgow to watch Celtic lift the Scottish Cup.
