Celtic’s Champions League capitulation against LASK came at an enormous financial cost, but the Hoops are still guaranteed a significant UEFA windfall following their drop into the Europa League.
Martin O’Neill’s side surrendered a four-goal aggregate advantage in Linz to miss out on the riches of Europe’s premier competition, although UEFA’s 2026/27 distribution schedule shows Celtic are still in line to bank millions over the coming weeks.
Every club eliminated in the Champions League play-offs receives €4.29million, with Celtic due that payment on September 18.
Another €4.14m — the first instalment of the Europa League starting fee — is scheduled to arrive just seven days later, taking the club’s guaranteed payments to €8.43m before their value-pillar allocation is considered.
A pre-LASK projection estimated Celtic’s minimum European return at around €12m without winning a single Europa League game.
There is also substantial money available once the league phase begins. Each victory is worth €450,000, while draws earn €150,000, with additional payments determined by Celtic’s final position in the 36-team table.
Finishing inside the top eight would bring another €600,000 and automatic qualification for the last 16, itself worth €1.75m. Reaching the quarter-finals would earn a further €2.5m, with €4.2m available for making the semi-finals.
Celtic will learn their eight Europa League opponents on Friday, with four matches taking place at Parkhead and the additional revenue generated through ticket sales and hospitality falling outside UEFA’s distribution figures.
None of it comes close to compensating for the Champions League fortune Celtic allowed to slip through their hands in Austria.
However, the guaranteed Europa League income also leaves little financial justification for allowing the LASK disaster to derail plans for the remainder of the transfer window.
The UEFA payments will arrive after the deadline, but Celtic were already aware of the financial safety net available should they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Who cares? The board will probably resort to the norm of hoarding everything they get their greasy hands on from UEFA.
We have a better chance of winning the lottery then progressing in Europe.
BTW MacCowan has carried the can, it is deserved enormously, but he wasnt alone, Nygren and Tounekti should be shipped out immediately, none of that trio can be relied on, so get them off the wage bill.
