Former Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy looks set to make his return to management with Ligue 1 Strasbourg. The Frenchman left Celtic in January after a woeful eight game spell in which Celtic picked up just two wins.
Nancy, who was appointed as the permanent successor to Brendan Rodgers in December, lasted just 33 days before departing the club. Now, according to Onze Mondial, the ex-Columbus Crew manager has emerged as the front runner to replace Gary O’Neil at Strasbourg.
Strasbourg have become increasingly high profile given their connection to BlueCo, who also own Chelsea. This has led to resentment from supporters but also a connection to Stamford Bridge’s vast pool of youth players. Rosenior used his time in North East France to advance his managerial career before an ill fated spell at Chelsea.
Both Rosenior and O’Neil have used Strasbourg to return to the Premier League. It would be interesting to see how Nancy fares in Ligue 1 and hopefully he is a success. Nancy, meanwhile, will be tasked with rebuilding his reputation after a bruising time at Celtic.
Other reports have suggested Bodø/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen is in talks for the job so it may seem that it is not as clear cut as has been suggested in this report.
There is a school of thought that Nancy could have been a success had it been ahead of a new season but the timing of the appointment put him up against it from the start. The run of games, the drastic change in the formation and key personnel being unavailable made it extremely difficult to win players and fans around.
It will definitely be an interesting one to watch.
