Benji could be a key player for Celtic this season under the guidance of Martin O’Neill. Watch him flourish…
Benjamin Nygren was undoubtedly Celtic’s Player of the Year last season, being the top goalscorer with 21 goals across all competitions, and registering numerous assists in his debut campaign made him the stand out player by a country mile.
Daizen Maeda could have something to say about that, but the Japanese international only really got going in the last six weeks of the season, whilst Benji contributed his part consistently.
However, even after his outstanding debut season, Benji is still seen as a decisive figure among the supporters, with some remarkably still fully believing that he isn’t good enough to wear the Hoops.
Of course at Celtic you have to do more than score goals, and create assists, you’ve got to flawless all round complete footballer, but what his critics need to realise, is that the Swede is still relatively young having just recently turned 25, and will only get better with time.
Martin O’Neill is the man to bring the best out in Benji, and next season will prove just as much, as I fully believe and expect that the former Nordsjaelland man will elevate his game to a whole new level.
Nygren struggled for consistency due to not having a regular position in the side, and playing under several managers wouldn’t have helped.
But under Martin he looked a more accomplished player, and he did most of his best work from the centre of the midfield, a position I fully expect to see him deployed in next season.
Benji is a both a creator, and goalscorer as his career stats will fully back up. So his best position is the attacking midfield position or the ‘number 10’ role due to his knack of being in the right place at the right time.
With rumours intensifying that Arne Engels could be away to England shortly and with Reo Hatate waiting on his agent securing him a move away from Celtic, there’s no doubt that Benjamin Nygren is going to be needed this season.
Every good side needs a goalscoring centre midfielder, and we have that in the building with Benji, just watch him flourish given the chance this upcoming campaign.

You have to take into account that Nygren was still a player bought for under 2M? So was never going to be the finished article as a footballer.
But in financial terms, he has repaid his fee, at least 10 times over, with his contributions last season?
Personally don’t value players upon financial terms, that’s more for the anti board brigade?
But makes a mockery of the claims that the transfer window, was a disaster, when you get nygren for the fee paid and his contributions throughout a season imo?
Hence, why i don’t buy into really?
Agreed that the attacking midfield role is best suited for nygren, as never really had the pace for a viable wide option for ourselves imo?
Does have a high degree of footballing intelligence, as his goals contributions confirm, especially with positions taken up, in and around the penalty area.
His biggest weakness within his game, was giving the ball away to easily, especially within the physical element of the Scottish game imo?
Even at that, it was improving by the end of last season, especially with getting marked more closely, as he had become a dangerous attacking threat to opposition teams?
Still would be uncomfortable with him trying to help out defensively, especially in our own third of the park, as still wouldn’t rate that element of his game to highly, all the same imo?
But looking ahead to this season, would still class Nygren as an important player within our playing squad imo?
Think playing off both Hogh and Duran, will benefit him hugely, with there hold up play, and allows for nygren to be even more involved within our build up play? Especially as Nygren has the shooting from distance within his game also.
Hopefully there is still improvement made with that forward pass into the front men, but with the potential variations added to our front line, that will give nygren more options available for his passing selection?
That should hopefully improve, especially with his footballing intelligence still very effective imo?
McCowan, showed glimpses of what he could bring to the positional role, during pre season? So competition building for the position already?
Wouldn’t even rule out Duran either, as he also has plenty within his all round game, to potentially play the role also, especially with Hogh ahead of him imo?
So MoN looking to build our squad, with plenty of flexibility available, especially within our attacking areas, with options available?
Is an exciting prospect, and not as one dimensional, as we were for large chunks of last season imo?
