Martin O’Neill has convinced the experienced professional to sign a one-year extension with the club moving forward into next season, after a successful short-term stay in Scotland.
News broke yesterday that The Ox was all set to sign on at the reigning Scottish Premiership Champions again, as Martin O’Neill goes about sorting out a squad that has multiple issues in various areas of the pitch too.
The news that Alex has signed on for another campaign to help share the load and impart some of that experience within the group will be a welcome boost for the supporters.
With Callum McGregor constantly being asked to bear the burden of being that experienced midfielder who drives the team on in games and also guides us through choppy waters, it will be a real bonus that the ex-Liverpool and Arsenal star will be around still to help ease some of the weight surrounding the captain and his daily duties at Lennoxtown and on matchdays.
It is believed that Martin O’Neill pushed to bring the Ox back home, with his aforementioned experience in the game at the highest level a key factor.
Having played for some massive clubs throughout the years and won the Premier League and UEFA Champions League too, as well as gaining 35 England appearances, there is no shortage of nous when it comes to Alex’s game.
Speaking on rejoining the club on his one-year deal in Glasgow’s East End, the one-time £35 million man said to the club’s official website:
“I’m delighted to be staying at Celtic for another year. It was an incredible time last season and to be part of that success in winning the league and Scottish Cup was so special.”
Alex is so happy to be back at Paradise and is now raring to go, ahead of the new season starting.
“I’m really excited to be back and I’m looking forward to meeting up with the boys and getting to work ahead of what will hopefully be another successful season,” a chuffed Oxlade-Chamberlain added.
