A look at the Americans who have donned the Hoops. Maybe it’s time we shopped in the American market? Happy Independence Day to all the Celtic supporters across the pond in the good old US of A…
Several players from the States, and those with American heritage have had the pleasure to don those famous Green and white hoops, whilst some have been slightly unfortunate not to have sampled the feeling of representing the greatest and most successful Football club in Scotland at a competitive level.
The most obvious two names are those who are still Celtic players, and those are Auston Trusty, and Cameron Carter Vickers.
The latter, The Big strong Man himself, has become something of an iconic figure in the eyes of the supporters since he arrived at the club on a loan deal from Spurs in 2021, and turned that it into a more permanent stay as he signed in a £6 million deal the following year.
CCV has known nothing but success since arriving at the club, and has become something of a valuable asset to our side, which was glaringly obvious in his long term absence last season. Thankfully he’s now back to full fitness, and raring to go next season, which is a huge boost for the club.
He’s also a full international for the USA due to his father who holds American citizenship, but due to his injury issues the centre back was unable to make the co-hosts’ World Cup squad.
One man who did make the USA squad is Pennsylvanian born Auston Trusty, who joined the club in 2024 in a £6 million move from Sheffield United, and has like his international colleague, played a massive part in our recent success.
Another American to have played for the club is Timothy Weah. The son of the legendary George, who had a short loan spell at the club back in 2019.
Brooklyn born Timothy arrived from PSG, and despite not setting the heather on fire, he still impressed, scoring four goals in 17 appearances before heading back to Paris leaving supporters now wishing we had signed him on a permanent basis, as he’s since gone on to play for the likes of Juventus and Marseille, as well as starring for his nation.
Whilst the likes of goalkeeper Dominic Cervi, and Defenders Andrew Gutman, and Manny Perez, were on the books, as was striker Cameron Harper, although all of them failed to make a competitive first team appearance.
John Harkes, and Brad Friedel also had trial periods at the club in the early to mid nineties, but they unfortunately failed to sign permanently for whatever reasons, and went on to carve out successful careers in the English Premier league, as well as representing their national side on many occasions.
There’s a decent pool of players coming through the ranks in the Untied States. Maybe it’s time we stared to look into the American market, and further our American connection?
