Celtic’s goalkeeper situation has been the topic of much debate this summer, after Kasper Schmeichel retired earlier than he would have liked due to injury and only Viljami Sinisalo and Ross Doohan left to fight over the number one jersey…

Martin O’Neill has now confirmed to the support that himself and the recruitment team are actively looking into the goalkeeping situation and at this stage, he doesn’t know what kind of profile they will go for. Various names have been linked to the club so far this window, with various reports from across Europe citing Celtic interest.

Two prominent names connected to the club for the space that Kasper Schmeichel has now vacated, are Dinko Horkas and Ernst Tjark. Reports from Spain claimed that the Bhoys were readying a €5 million deal for the UD Las Palmas star, with the club looking for at least €7 million though and it unclear whether the club would be willing to meet those demands.

Likewise, Ernst Tjark’s stock is sky-high at the moment after a great campaign with Hertha Berlin in the German second division and is being closely monitored by several sides. The stopper recently rejected the opportunity to join Bundesliga outfit VfL Wolfsburg and it is claimed that both the Hoops and Dutch giants Feyenoord are heavily interested in the 23-year-old.

When quizzed on the goalkeeping situation at present at Lennoxtown, Martin O’Neill said: “We’ve only got Sinisalo here at this minute and we’ve got Ross so we’re definitely looking for another goalkeeper. Whether it’ll be a youngish fellow, someone the same age as Sinisalo, or somebody a bit older, we’re definitely looking at it,” the gaffer said as reported by Scottish Sun.

Those remarks by O’Neill suggest that whilst the club are actively pursuing options, nothing is set in stone as of yet and there is still room for manouvere when it comes to the goalkeeper department. Regardless of who it may be, it sounds like there is definitely a new ‘keeper arriving at Celtic Park this summer window.

A tough decision that was always in the making for MoN regarding the keeper position?

Any serious money spent on a keeper, would potentially involves him getting the no1 Jersey?
But somehow don’t see sinisalo wanting to play the no2 keeper role either, especially as it possibly splits opinion on whether Sinisalo deserves the opportunity at remaining our no1 choice?

Personally believe that he deserves that opportunity myself, so can’t see ourselves spending big money, upon a keeper without offering him the guaranteed no1 Jersey imo?
So more likely that a cheaper backup option could be in the making?
Obviously changes, if the serious money is spent, and Sinisalo is prepared to continue in the back up role?
Don’t see Doohan changing from the no3 keeper role, and only really helping to fill our homegrown quota requirements within a 25man European squad?
