Compper endured a difficult spell in Glasgow after arriving from RB Leipzig in a £1 million deal, making just a single appearance for Celtic before falling completely out of favour under Brendan Rodgers. His only outing came in a 3-0 Scottish Cup victory over Morton in 2019.

Following his departure from the Hoops, the former Germany international headed back to Germany with Duisburg, where he began the transition into coaching.

His coaching career later took him to Russia, where he joined compatriot Markus Gisdol as assistant manager at Lokomotiv Moscow. Compper briefly stepped into the caretaker role after Gisdol resigned in protest following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The 41-year-old later revealed he faced significant criticism in Germany for remaining in Russia before eventually leaving the club the following year.

Compper has since continued to build his coaching credentials, spending time with RB Leipzig’s academy before becoming assistant manager at Swiss club St Gallen under Enrico Maasen.

According to The National, Royal Antwerp have now identified Compper as a leading candidate for their managerial vacancy, with his coaching experience in Belgium and previous work alongside interim boss Faris Haroun believed to have strengthened his prospects of landing the role.
