Feyenoord agree to terminate Calvin Stengs contract after Celtic interest

Celtic transfer target from last summer Calvin Stengs is available as a free agent after leaving Feyenoord. The winger has agreed with the Dutch side to part ways by mutual consent after an injury-laden few years.

Feyenoord have mutually terminated the contract of attacking midfielder Calvin Stengs – despite having one year left on his deal.

Last summer he was a target for Celtic & Leicester City, before joining Pisa on loan.

Celtic fans may remember the winger from the
Champions League campaign three seasons ago in which Stengs opened the scoring in a 2-0 win for the Dutch side. Since joining from Ligue 1 side Nice in 2023, Stengs made 59 appearances for Feyenoord, scoring 9 times and assisting on 21 occasions.

Stengs joined Pisa but made just 4 appearances before an injury cut his season short. Curiously, Royal Antwerp are interested in signing the player one year after Celtic bought Mikel Ange Balikwisha.

Celtic could use a couple of wingers but it is unlikely that the club would return to Stengs given his injury record. It may be that he could do a job but would require to prove his fitness, not just at Celtic but at any potential new club.

Celtic are pursuing a deal for Haissem Hassan as they look to improve their options in the wide areas. Bodo/Glimt striker Kasper Hogh continues to be a target as Celtic look to get a new No.9 in the door.

A player wouldn’t usually terminate a contract, unless he has another potential move lined up?

Couldn’t totally rule ourselves out, especially as we have bit of a track record, of hoping players can restart there careers, by using us as a possible destination?
And injury prone players doesn’t seem to put us off either imo?
