The 25-year-old came through Celtic’s youth system before leaving the club permanently for Kilmarnock following a number of loan spells.

During his time in Glasgow, McInroy spent a year working under Maloney with the reserve side and believes the current assistant manager was always destined for success in coaching.

Now with Shelbourne, McInroy will sit out this week’s pre-season clash against his former club in Ireland, although he is looking forward to catching up with familiar faces from his time at Celtic.

Looking back on his experience under Maloney, the midfielder credited the ex-Scotland international with helping his development and says he learned plenty from the highly-rated coach.

“The assistant manager Shaun Maloney was my reserve team coach for about a year,” McInroy told the Irish Mirror. “I had a good relationship with him. He was a brilliant coach. He actually left us to go to Belgium and be assistant manager there. That showed the level he was at.

“He was a great coach, I had a really good relationship with him and I learned a lot from him.

“I remember him from watching Scotland when I was younger. I loved watching him play for Scotland. He was a really good player.”
