Benjamin Nygren became the latest Celt to exit the World Cup as the Swedish side where soundly beaten by a Kylian Mbappe inspired France in last nights 3-0 last 32 defeat in New York.
Benji ,who was of course Celtic’s top scorer and Player of the Year last season, made an appearance from the bench in the 82nd minute with the game already gone. Despite a decent start Sweden were emphatically brushed aside by a silky Les Bleus side, meaning an exit from the competition at the round of 32 stages.
The Celtic midfielder, followed his Celtic team-mates Kieran Tierney, Tony Ralston, Sebastian Tounekti, Yang, and Daizen Maeda in exiting at an early stage with their respective nations.
Now our focus is on the remaining two Celts, Alistair Johnston, and Auston Trusty with the latter being involved in the early morning game as Co hosts the United States take on Bosnia Herzegovina in Los Angeles.
Auston played in his sides last game which was a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the already eliminated Turkey, a game which seen the big centre back open the scoring for his nation.
Auston seemed to suffer an injury scare during the game, but hopefully is okay to take his place in the team for the upcoming clash which kicks off at 1am our time. Perhaps if fit enough, he’ll most like have to make do with a place on the USA bench?
Alistair Johnston however is a regular starter for other co-hosts Canada, and he helped his nation become the first country to advance into the last 16 after a late goal against South Africa, which ensured a showdown with Morocco in Houston on this Saturday, 4th July.
Out of the two sides, you would say the USA are best placed to advance, by let’s hope both our Bhoys are involved in the last eight of the prestigious competition.
