Celtic look set to be without Yang Hyun-jun for their opening derby against Rangers after the winger was included in South Korea’s squad for this year’s Asian Games.
The tournament will be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4, with the men’s football competition restricted to under-23 players. However, each nation is permitted to select three overage players.
Yang has secured one of those places alongside Eom Ji-sung and Lee Ki-hyuk.
While his participation would be a significant personal milestone, as it would earn him exemption from South Korea’s mandatory military service, it is expected to leave Celtic without the attacker for the first Glasgow Derby clash of the season on September 20.
Speaking after Celtic’s 1-1 draw with Shelbourne at Tolka Park, Martin O’Neill said: “We might have to miss him for a number of weeks, but so be it. We knew that before we extended his contract.”
