However new but old boss, Martin O’Neill, has reaffirmed the need for the club to add more bodies after the Duran negotiations are completed, with several key additons required in vital areas of the team, as well as far greater squad depth.
For too long now, there has been zero quality added, with filler preferred over more appropriately sourced levels injected into the squad, which revealed itself last year.
That cannot be allowed to happen again, if Celtic and Martin O’Neill harbour any ambitions to reach the heights of UEFA Champions League football and potentially make it to the knockout rounds, if they make it past their play-off tie this August.
The defeat to Kairat Almaty last year at this time was a disgraceful episode in the club’s rich and colourful history, which was degraded when Brendan Rodgers’ men fell to the Kazakh side.
O’Neill spoke briefly on the need for more incomings after Duran post-match against Shelbourne at Tolka Park, when prompted on if this would be the first of many more.
As reported by Daily Record, the 74-year-old was quoted as saying: “Well, absolutely (if there could be many more). We definitely know. We have been making inroads into it, like everything else. Sometimes you get thwarted with things, sometimes it’s not, but yeah, we need a number of players still.”
The way in which Martin O’Neill is speaking will give the supporters hope that he has given the message loud and clear to our principal shareholder and his cabal which run the show at Celtic Park.
This tone and language is far removed from O’Neill’s initial interview with Celtic TV, when he told Gerry McCulloch that they needed “a couple of players to augment the squad.”
Perhaps the message is getting across?
