Well done Scotland, but this Angus Gunn to Celtic talk in worrying

Well done Scotland on a great result against a decent Haiti side. But Angus Gunn to Celtic? It’s a no thank you from me…

First of all, good morning and apologies for the late start on Celtic Shorts this morning. How are the headaches?

Well done to Steve Clarke and his Scotland team for winning our much anticipated opening World Cup group game against Haiti, by one goal to nil in what was a competitive match that could have gone either way.

A win is a win and although it was by the slenderest of margins, it’s three points and that’s all that matters. Scotland top the group after the first round of fixtures as Brazil and Morocco played out a 1-1 draw earlier yesterday evening.

Our Bhoys in the squad Kieran Tierney, and Anthony Ralston where unused substitutes, but it was lifelong Celtic fan John McGinn who hit a scrappy first half deflected winner to give us our first World Cup win in 36 years.

Take That sang ‘No Scotland No Party’ at Hampden while The Script belted out Flower of Scotland 

The size of the Tartan Army at the game was astonishing and the support that the team was getting back home in Scotland was tremendous. Even Take That at Hampden last night were signing ‘No Scotland No Party’ while Irish band The Script sang the first verse of ‘Flower of Scotland’ or so I am reliably informed!

Now to my main point

Now to my main point, which is regarding the Angus Gunn to Celtic link. The the Scotland goalkeeper was recently tipped for a move to Celtic by ex-Scotland international Paul Dickov, but I’ve got to say after watching him closely in the wee small hours of the morning, I can categorically state that I don’t want him anywhere near the Celtic number one jersey.

The Nottingham Forest back up goalie and son of former Scotland keeper Bryan has only played one competitive game this campaign, and it showed as he looked rusty throughout the regulation ninety plus the ten added minutes in Massachusetts.

Former Celt Jack Hendry stood up to the Haiti challenge 

He looked nervy every time the ball was thrown into the box, and his handling of the ball looked suspect.  It was an overall unimpressive all round display and his clean sheet came about due to poor finishing and some resolute defending from former Celt Jack Hendry and Grant Hanley.

Morocco and Brazil will know that Scotland is suspect in the goalkeeping area 

If that’s how he handles a World Cup opener against a low ranking side, then you can only imagine how he’d cope in the heat of a Glasgow derby, or a big European game, or at any hostile away ground in the SPFL for that matter. A more immediate concern is Scotland’s games against Morocco and Brazil, both ranked in the world’s top ten.

I’ve nothing against the lad, and he’s had good experience playing for the likes of Norwich and Southampton, and of course the Scottish national side, but he’s nothing more than a back up keeper for a bottom half EPL side.

Angus Gunn for Celtic? No thank you. I’d rather stick with Viljami Sinisalo with Ross Doohan as his back-up…
