Celtic today offloaded Honduran winger Luis Palma after Polish Champions Lech Poznan activated their agreed buyout clause valued at around £3.5m…

After weeks of haggling and seeking a reduction the pre-arranged fee, Celtic earlier this week told the Ekstraklasa winners that the price was fixed at the beginning of the loan deal and would not be reduced.

The interest from Spanish side Sevilla possibly helped Lech Poznan officials make their minds up to break their record transfer fee to sign the 26 year-old Celtic winger on a permanent basis.

Luis Palma agrees three-year deal with Polish Champions

Luis Palma has completed his transfer and has signed a three year deal with Lech Poznan who broke the news of the signing via their social media channels saying:

“You’ve all been waiting for this news. We have activated the buyout clause for Luis Palma from Scottish Celtic FC. Luis has become a Kolejorz player until 30 June 2029.”

This season Palma scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists in all competitions for the Ekstraklasa title winners.

“It’s clear that we want to keep Luis Palma. We’re working on it”

Karol Klimczak, the Poznan club president, speaking about Luis Palma’s future at the club after the title was won said: “It’s clear that we want to keep Luis Palma. We’re working on it. We want to sign him, it’s not easy, but we want to.”

Lech Poznan director, Adrian Gałuszka added: “It’s no secret that Luis feels good in Poznan. He was a magician this season, put in important numbers and contributed to several important team results. We have to wait for the final decisions, which I suspect will be in the coming days.”

Luis Palma moved to Celtic from Greek club Aris Saloniki in 2023

Luis Palma moved to Celtic from Greek club Aris Saloniki in 2023 and returned to the country on loan to Olympiacos in the second half of 2024-25. That loan move wasn’t as successful as he’d hoped and
he returned to Celtic before heading out to Poland where his form and fortunes improved.

Palma scored 10 goals in 36 games in his debut season with Celtic, including goals in a decent Champions League campaign under Brendan Rodgers. However his pace – or lack of it – seemed to be a bigger problem in Scotland than in Poland where he has found some real form.

Perhaps Luis Palma would have been better playing as a ten at Celtic?

Many Celtic supporters reckoned that Palma could have played the number 10 role in a similar fashion to Tom Rogic as he fell out of favour behind the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda.

While Luis never reached the heights at Celtic that his performances promised, he was a decent enough player for the club and leaves with everyone’s best wishes.

With Stephen Welsh leaving yesterday and Luis Palma today, plus none of the January loan signings being retained, the overloaded Celtic squad size is at long last reducing. More needs to follow to make way for the quality additions that the new manager will need.

Whether that is Martin O’Neill or Robbie Keane remains to be seen. Here’s the latest from Sky News…
