Auston Trusty has revealed there was never any doubt inside the Celtic dressing room that the Premiership trophy would remain at Celtic Park despite last season’s dramatic title race.
Unlike previous campaigns, Celtic spent much of the season pursuing rather than protecting top spot and only moved to the summit in the closing stages of the final-day showdown against Hearts, with two late strikes courtesy of Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand sealing a 3-1 victory and a fifth consecutive league title.
The Hoops completed the domestic double by overcoming Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup final, with then interim boss Martin O’Neill credited for helping inspire the side through a testing campaign.
Now, Auston Trusty believes the adversity the dressing room experienced throughout the season ultimately highlighted the character within the squad.
Speaking while away with the USA squad at the World Cup, the defender said via The Herald: “Some may view the season as a negative for Celtic, but also it was such a positive. It showed the true tenacity and willingness of a team and organisation to find a way to win. It was such a remarkable and amazing season.
“It’s a lot easier to chase instead of being chased. We’re so used to being chased.
“So they flipped the script and we showed ourselves that we can win the league by 20 million points if we want to.
“Or if we need to chase the league, we can do that as well. The winning mentality we have shone through.”
Trusty believes the scrutiny surrounding Celtic’s campaign shows the expectations that come with representing the club, insisting success remains the only acceptable outcome.
He added: “This season kind of showed what Celtic is. A lot of times in football, especially fans and organisations that are used to winning the entire time, in the history of Celtic they’ve had a great formula to have success year by year.
“When that formula gets messed up or messed with, you can have different results. But Celtic is a winning culture. That’s why you go there. It really is that culture.
“The entire season, I knew we were going to win. We all knew we were going to win.”
