Celtic has today parted company with Celtic Academy graduate Stephen Welsh who has left the club by mutual consent after the 2026 Scottish Champions agreed to terminate his contract one year early…
Welsh has had a standout season at the heart of the Motherwell defence and is now set to move abroad with interest in the former Scotland U21 skipper coming from France and Poland.
That move will be easier to make as a free agent with Celtic effectively waiving any possible transfer fee for the player as a gesture of goodwill towards the Celtic star who has Celtic in his blood.

Anthony Joseph from Sky Sports reports: ‘Celtic and Stephen Welsh have mutually agreed to part ways this summer. He’s been allowed to terminate his contract a year early – a goodwill gesture for his services & helping Motherwell take points off Celtic’s title rivals last season. Clubs in France and Poland interested.’

Not too sure that the remark about Motherwell taking points off Celtic’s title rivals is actually a factor in this. Stephen Welsh was recalled by Martin O’Neill in January during his season long loan at Motherwell.
Yet he was only given a few minutes in the Scottish Cup tie at Rugby Park against Auchinleck Talbot before returning to the Fir Park side, after discussions with the Celtic manager.

Whatever the reason, allowing Stephen Welsh to terminate his contract early is a decent gesture from the club and one that the player will appreciate as he looks to build on his success at Motherwell.
Could he be heading to Toulouse for a reunion with his former Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou? We’ll find out soon enough.
