Rohl’s inevitable departure, McInnes gets dream job while Martin O’Neill watches

Neither Danny Rohl or Derek McInnes could beat Martin O’Neill last season. He’ll have no fear over the managerial changes at Rangers and Hearts…

Danny Rohl has decided to up sticks and join Austrian giants RB Salzburg, after guiding the Rangers to third place, in a season devoid of silverware.

The German arrived in a blaze of positivity

The German like all new Ibrox managers arrived in a blaze of positivity, but was literally eliminated from all three competitions last term by Celtic, with the septuagenarian Martin O’Neill coming out of retirement, and getting the better of the man half his age.

So it came as no surprise to learn that Danny has jumped ship at the first offer that winged his way, and ultimately he’s walking away the Rangers way, or as it happens to be in this case, actually running away.

Derek McInnes well used to finishing Celtic to second 

Danny’s replacement is of course Derek McInnes, a manager who also finished above the German in the Scottish Premiership, but like his predecessor, he couldn’t get the better of the veteran Irishman, and bottled the chance to win the league, finishing the campaign second best, something that makes him a great fit for the second Rangers.

McInnes has finally been handed his dream gig, and will be itching to be a success, with the Scottish mainstream media in no doubt championing him to be a success. He understands the culture, knows all the words to their songs, and will have his former Hearts captain alongside him as Lawrence Shankland has already made his own dream move to Ibrox on a free transfer.

Celtic probably our own biggest threat 

Del is a half decent manager in all fairness, and will be better equipped than any time in his managerial career due to having better financial resources at his disposal, so he will be a threat to Celtic, it would be naive to think otherwise. But one we can fully handle, provided Martin is backed this summer and the recruitment is up to scratch.

We have nothing much to fear over the appointment of Derek McInnes. He’s been well versed in being second best to Celtic in his long managerial career, and this time should be no different.

Yes, we will have a challenge as we always do, but with a fully backed Martin O’Neill at the helm, the Rangers and McInnes will have to worry about us, not the other way round.

You can’t survive if you can’t beat your city rivals

The writing was on the wall for Rohl, in Glasgow you can’t survive if you can’t beat your city rivals and that was the story of Rohl’s undoing. So getting compensation for him from Red Bull, allowing them to bring in McInnes and pay a smaller sum to Hearts is clearly good business.

Hearts painted the bus and printed the t-shirts 

And with that £40 million spent last season the Rangers will have more players already at the club than Celtic where there will be a huge summer transition. So for Celtic, the challenge from Ibrox is clear, how Hearts responds to losing their talisman, manager and Scottish Premiership title after painting the bus and printing the t-shirts is anyone’s guess.

Celtic have to be ready regardless. Last week Brian Wilson talked about busy weeks ahead with the summer transfer window now open. When will we see the first new signings? The sooner the better…
