Robbie Keane is poised for talks with Celtic hierarchy TONIGHT as the club steps up its search for a new permanent manager.
The former Republic of Ireland international emerged as a leading contender following the end of his spell at Ferencváros, where he departed by mutual consent at the end of the season after 14 months in charge.
Keane enjoyed success in Hungary, leading the Budapest outfit to the league championship in 2025 before securing Hungarian Cup glory earlier last month. His position had appeared strong after agreeing a new contract in December, a reward for guiding the club into the Europa League knockout phase.
However, fortunes shifted during the closing months of the campaign. Ferencváros relinquished their domestic crown after finishing a single point behind ETO FC Győr, ending an eight-year reign as champions.
Now, as per Alan Nixon, Keane is expected to present his plans for the future direction of Celtic during talks with club this evening.
Details of where the meeting is taking place are currently ‘secret’ but the 45 year-old is set for formal talks tonight.
A report via Derek McGregor also suggests that Keane will propose that he wants Celtic icon Scott Brown to be part of his coaching staff. The former Ayr United boss left his post at the Somerset Park club in March.
Former Celtic defender Jonny Hayes is also reportedly wanted by Keane to be on his backroom team.
Speculation last night suggesting Martin O’Neill had already reached an agreement to become the club’s next manager are inaccurate, with Celtic continuing to assess candidates.
Among those also believed to be under consideration is Wales boss Craig Bellamy, although no formal talks have been held with the ex-Celtic forward.
