Reo Hatate making it official that he wants to leave, Celtic must grant him that wish if the price is right…
Reo Hatate has informed the club that he wishes to leave the club this summer, and whilst it will be a big blow to lose a player of his quality, we can only respect his decision but only if we receive the right price.
What would the right price be for a player of Reo’s standard?
Well, with two years of his deal still to run, the ball is firmly in the club’s court, and I’d be willing to hazard a guess that a fee of anywhere between £6 million – £8 million would be enough for Celtic to do business.
That might seem relatively low for a player of Reo’s ability, but with the player making his feelings very clear in a public way, then buying clubs can use that as a massive bargaining chip.
Keeping a player who no longer wants to be here does Celtic no favours
Similar to his fellow countryman Daizen Maeda, Reo has stated clearly his desire to move on, and keeping a player who no longer wants to be here, does no favours for both the club and player, as we witnessed in the first half of last campaign with Daizen.
Reo cost the club a bargain £1.4 million from J1 league outfit Kawasaki Frontale back in early 2022, and has contributed massively to our success in that period, as he fully proved himself to be one, if not the most talented playmaker in the country on his day.
Hatate entering the peak years of his career
He’s since fallen out of favour, maybe due to his desire to test himself at a different level, but he’s still a class act, and at 28 is entering the peak years of his career.
A minimum of £6 million would be a fair price
So it goes without saying that a minimum of £6 million would be a fair price to acquire the Japanese playmakers signature, and I’m sure we will no problems in finding a club willing to do business.
It will be a blow to lose a quality player such as Reo, but he is replaceable, and a few million quid will go a long way in signing a replacement.

Think that your price is too low imo?
Would certainly start a potential bidding war for Hatate, which I wouldn’t be surprised, if that actually should happen either imo?
Totally agree that keeping players that don’t want to be here with ourselves, shouldn’t be kept, as brings to many problems for a manager to try to overcome, especially over the course of an entire season? Which seemed to be on show, for to much of last season also?
Personally terms will possibly decide the final destination for Hatate, along with a number of our players, along with a fair few, who we are hoping to attract also?
For ourselves, would like to think our wage structure and budget could be improved upon, as seems like a sticking point for ourselves still?
Can understand players looking for the bigger contracts available to themselves, but still struggling to understand why we seem to be able to make the case so easy for our players also?
We still require players who have been with ourselves for the longer term, which Maeda and Hatate did provide for ourselves.
But trying to get the likes again is becoming an even harder achievement, with a player trading model, seemingly taking preference within our club at present imo?
Getting replacements for a 2 year cycle at present for so many, continues to bring a hit and miss approach within the transfer market?
Might be good enough for profits within our player trading model, but lacks the stability that’s required for making progress further within European competitions all the same?
Especially if player numbers are going to get reduced within the core element of a squad building process?
Looking at 10 additions at least, each summer, is no way to be operating if any ambition is to be achieved within European competitions, especially for CL levels, just to be competitive imo?
It’s only about profit regarding celtic board dermot Desmond shareholders” has been successful for them all and the supporters. But Europe has been a complete failure especially cl where the serious money is for our club is we know we cant compete against the top teams but teams who have a smaller revenue on us can do vastly better so something not right on what we are doing so frustrating for our supporters.
