Luis Palma at Celtic – A half decent start, before he faded into obscurity

Best of luck to Luis Palma, but in all honesty, he was never good enough to play for Celtic

Best of luck to Luis Palma, but in all honesty, he was never good enough to play for Celtic…

Best of luck to Luis Palma who has joined Polish side Lech Poznan for a fee of £3.5 million, which happens to be the highest fee the Polish Exstraklasa club have ever parted with for a player.

Luis Palma cost £3.5 million back in 2023

The Honduran international joined the club from Greek side Aris for a fee believed to be around £3.5 million back in 2023, and despite a bit of a half decent start, he faded into obscurity, which resulted in a couple of loan spells firstly with Greek side Olympiacos before a successful spell with his now permanent club Lech Poznan.

Palma had a decent assist and goal record during his time in Glasgow

Luis registered a decent assist and goal record during his time in Glasgow, with a respectable 10 goals and 10 assists in just 48 games, and he recorded a similar but slightly better record during his loan spell at Poznan (12 goals and 10 assists in 47 games) but that doesn’t quite tell the entire story of his overall contribution, especially in the green and white of Celtic.

A wide player at Celtic is expected to take players on, someone who can get bums off seats as such, but unfortunately Luis didn’t posses that in his locker, and his overall commitment was sometimes questionable.

The Celtic support had made their mind up about Luis

The Celtic support had made their mind up about Luis a long time ago, and so did Brendan Rodgers the man who ‘signed’* him, hence the reason he was sent out on loan to Greece then Poland.

Some supporters reckon we could have done with his input last season, but that is total nonsense, as the only reasoning for that was that we had to put up with the likes of Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Joel Mvuka who both in fairness made Luis look like a superstar.

The harsh realities of professional football

At the end of the day in the harsh realities of professional football Luis Palma just wasn’t good enough to make it at Celtic. This move is best for concerned, as the player gets the move he wants, and club recoups the money they invested in the Honduran. Everyone’s a winner.

*It was actually Mark Lawwell who spent the summer of 2023 spending the £25m Jota windfall from Saudi Arabia before Brendan Rodgers’ return to the club.

I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby.
