Paul Lambert has advised that Celtic have a big summer ahead, if they are to sort out the major issues which have dogged the club for successive transfer windows now…

The former Celtic midfielder knows all about playing for the man who now sits in the manager’s chair at Parkhead, after the club have reportedly dealt Martin O’Neill in for one-year, with the possibility of another to follow.

Major restructuring behind the scenes and rebuilding of the playing squad is required, with doing it on the cheap not an option, now that we have been left in this mismanaged position.

There is one chink of light though: Martin O’Neill.

Lambert reckons that there isn’t a better man to undertake such a vast and complex situation on moving ahead. The ex-Aston Villa and Norwich City boss played under Martin O’Neill at Celtic Park for several years in his pomp, so knows what he’s capable of. “It’s a no-brainer,” Lambert told BBC Scotland. “He knows the club, he knows what it is to win there.”

Regardless of who was the incumbent in the manager’s chair going forward, what has always been certain is that quality needs to be added to this team heading into the future.

At too many points in the last campaign, the football was turgid and miserable, with no playing style really present. That has to change for supporters and new additions have to be able to cope with the demands of playing for a club the size of Celtic and winning weekly, both domestically and on the European scene.

“Hopefully he gets the players he wants to carry the club forward,” Paul Lambert

On the new potential arrivals this summer window, our old captain was optimistic that the Saint will receive proper backing and support from those above him.

“Hopefully he gets the players he wants to carry the club forward,” Lambert said. “It’s a big summer for Celtic. I think what happened last year has given them a fright. What he did was galvanise things and I’m pretty sure he will have the last say on which players come in,” the club legend added.

For this to work, Martin MUST have carte blanche to bring in the players he wants, whilst complete and final say should be his, irregardless of the opinions from upstairs.

This club has shown it can flourish in the past, when the football department is left to get on with running the footballing side of things, and those in the Boardroom just write the cheques.

This really isn’t difficult to grasp.
