Colby Donovan’s future at Celtic Park has been reassured, following a swell of online chatter that suggested the youngster was set to become a free agent at the worst possible time…
Donovan enjoyed somewhat of a breakout season this year at Parkhead, being utilised substantially throughout the campaign.
Alistair Johnston’s unfortunate and recurring hamstring injury, which plagued his season at the Hoops from October of last term, meant that young Colby had been asked to come in and deputise in the Canadian stalwart’s absence, along with veteran full-back and Scotland international, Anthony Ralston. Donovan acquitted himself extraordinarily well, providing pace and tenacity on the right-hand side of the defence.
Celtic did move to bring Mexican star, Julian Aruajo, to the club in January, but even then, the young Donovan was always being brought into the fold later on in games to help provide that extra injection of vibrancy to a team that was blowing hot and cold. An injury towards the end of the season up at Tannadice kept him out of some crucial fixtures, although we did have the saving grace of an Alistair Johnston return later on.
Now, according to The Celtic Way, the 19-year-old right-back and wing-back is still contracted to the Parkhead outift, so there is no need to panic, following the hysteria online lately.
The news is a welcome boost for the Bhoys going into what will be a summer of significant change and rebuilding, within the walls of Paradise. It’s great to know that our breakout academy star will be around and very much involved going forward.

Believe it would be sensible business to actually get Donovan signed up, on an improved contract this summer imo?
I know he already qualifies as a B team player, within our 25man European squad, but we should also be taking advantage of such a situation also imo?
At best, Donovan is going to potentially be regarded as a 3rd choice RB next season?
At present we have AJ and Ralston in position for the RB position, for which Donovan is already challenging Ralston as backup to AJ.
Now, it wouldn’t be regarded as a high priority for ourselves within the RB position, but there is always a chance of that changing also?
With Ralston regarded as 1 of our 8 homegrown quota players at present? Could we look at maybe signing Julian for the position, with any fee for Ralston to help fund such a deal? With Donovan still able to cover any injuries that should occur, will still leave ourselves fairly solid in the RB position still?
Only a thought, but wouldn’t expect anything to be done, if anything at all, until late in the window, and after the CL qualification games?
In the meantime getting Donovan on an improved contract is a no brainer decision that hopefully is done, quicker than later imo?
