£40 million war chest, you having a laugh Macca?…
Former Celtic favourite Frank McAvennie made quite the claim this week, stating his belief that Martin O’Neill will be handed a substantial transfer kitty, £40 million to be exact, something that we can all fully agree is very unlikely to ever happen.
I admire Macca’s optimism, but to even suggest we would invest that sort of cash is borderline certifiable, as anyone who knows anything about the club will know that they aren’t renowned for troubling the bank balance!
Don’t get me wrong I believe Martin will be backed significantly, but only to the tune of what maybe half of what Macca is suggesting, and that cash will come from player sales.
Even if we cash in on Arne Engles, who will likely fetch upwards of £25 million, or even reach the Champions League group stages, I can’t see the Irishman being handed a massive war-chest, maybe a modest one.
I like the overwhelming majority of the Celtic supporters firmly believe that we should be spending the sort of cash Frank McAvennie is suggesting.
Particularly when we make huge profits on player sales, as it allows us to balance the books and adhere to UEFA fair play rules, but unfortunately our past history, especially with the current board in charge, tells us it ain’t going to happen.
Recent rumours in the transfer market tell us all you need to know about our limitations. Guys at the bargain end such as Elias Filet, and Benjamin Tahirovic are very much the market we will be shopping in.
We should be targeting guys such as Kasper Hogh, who will cost somewhere in the region of £10 million, but history tells us that it’s nothing but wishful thinking. I hope I’m wrong on that one.
We can’t even negotiate a decent deal for Martin O’Neill’s preferred choice of coaching staff, so what chance to be have of negotiating bumper player incomings this summer with the penny pinching mindset that prevails at Celtic Park in every area across the football club barring executive remuneration, bonuses and pension contributions.
Take Michael Nicholson the Celtic CEO, the man who is supposed to lead from the front. He was nowhere to be seen this week as six-month interim chairman spoke to the club’s TV channel to hit back at the anti-Celtic rubbish and lies that were told after our title win against Hearts three weeks ago.
Fair play to Brian Wilson for doing that but it is Michael Nicholson who is supposed to lead from the front as the CEO as he is paid the big bucks to do that.
I hope to be proved wrong, but I very much doubt that Celtic will show the ambition that has been promised by Brian Wilson and Dermot Desmond this week.

Still a bit early to be banging the anti board drum, especially with the transfer window not even officially open yet imo?
And that’s with a world cup only getting started up at present?
There is expected to be a fair amount of incoming upon player sells, which we are expecting?
It’s totally unknown what that figure might be, but the 60M figure being floated around at present, might not be as unrealistic as we are thinking, but will depend upon who,and Engels and Hatate, would potentially raise over half that 60M figure on there own imo?
Spending money, especially upon player’s, remains a massive sticking issue within our club, especially with a self sufficient player trading model in existence?
Profits continue to be made within the player model alone, so a potential bonus system, possibly applies to whatever European competitions we end up within, and success gained within them imo?
With contracts potentially offered on a europa league basis at present, especially as CL football is not a certainty on a season by season basis?
So this low balling within contract negotiations, upon fees, and contract offers, doesn’t present the board in a good light whatsoever, and still don’t understand as to why they leave themselves wide open to the criticism, especially with money readily available within our club?
Personally couldn’t care less about how much is paid upon individual players, especially when a fair few of our players, that have presented some of our best value upon the pitch, have fallen into the under 2M category. Yet the spotlight is placed upon the amount of failures, with a tendency to overlook the success gained within a player trading model in existence?
Only look across Glasgow to see that 40M only buys you 3rd place within the SPFL last season? And gaining nothing within the player trading model as a result also, yet looking for more expenditure this summer?
And it gives ourselves a great laugh at how those shite hawks operate, and win nothing in return as a result?
I do expect ourselves to spend within this window, and hopefully MoN can sell our club, better within an SPFL environment, that is struggling to attract the player’s quality factor, that we are hoping for?
Placing a value upon how much paid for them, is a potential problem for nearly every club to overcome, but as a club, we tend to make the most noise surrounding a situation, every club hopes to improve upon, within a season on season basis?
Unfortunately, we are currently operating at to many players, changing around within a transfer window each summer for my own liking?
Effects stability within forming a core group within our squad, that is required to progress within European football, or we will remain at a hit and miss approach, on a season by season basis imo?
So don’t believe that every signing we make, has to be upon keeping our player trading model strong either?
Would hope more stability can be formed during this window, with players wanting to be with ourselves longer, than just hoping to use ourselves as a potential gateway to better fortunes elsewhere, further down there careers, which is getting shorter from to many players in recent times for my liking at present?
But where, and what is the solution, that no-one seems to know the answer to, but plenty of moaning regarding the situation in existence?
Personally believe that it’s a longshot for ourselves to become a decent CL team during this window imo?
Not impossible, but will be regarded as a failure if not achieved all the same?
This despite struggling to even have 16 players in position at present, to even complete a match, let alone one at CL levels?
That’s the levels MoN is already going to have find solutions to, within his decision making within the overall process?
Massive ask for himself to be taken on, and surprised he was even prepared to take it on for ourselves also?
So the end result can’t even be judged upon, especially as they haven’t even started yet?
But judgement by myself anyway, will remain at what players can bring to ourselves, moreso upon the field of play, than what the player trading model can generate for ourselves imo?
