Celtic have added Kawasaki Frontale attacker Soma Kanda to their scouting watchlist as the club continues to assess talent in the Japanese market.
Sources in Japan via 67 Hail Hail have indicated that the Hoops has been gathering information on the 20-year-old striker, who also attracted attention from clubs in England’s Championship earlier this year.
While opportunities at senior level have been limited in recent months, Kanda has enhanced his reputation through his performances for Japan’s youth national teams.
The youngster is also understood to be studying English as he prepares for the possibility of a move abroad in the near future.
In contrast to former Celtic recruits Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi, who followed the traditional university pathway before entering professional football, Kanda progressed directly into the J.League during his teenage years.
Despite being regarded as one of Kawasaki Frontale’s promising prospects, he has yet to establish himself as a regular starter for the J.League side. The forward helped fill the void left by Shin Yamada’s transfer to Celtic last summer.
Whether Celtic decide to formalise their interest remains unclear. Meanwhile, the J.League is nearing the completion of its transition to a summer-to-summer schedule, bringing it into alignment with the football calendar used in Scotland.

We have supposedly looking for players since January to get them in the summer window. The window is open WHY are we not going for the target players we were supposedly watching. All we here are that we are interested in this player and that player. Why have not signed anymore, or are we waiting as usual to the last day of the window to make a move for someone, it’s organised BS again
Celtic are great at monitoring players, also brilliant at assessing them, looking at them and keeping an eye on them.
You couldn’t make it up.
The even more inexperienced project player that replaced the project player we signed from the dame team, and never used.
Literally what’s the point of even thinking about this.
We need a proven goalscorer. Experienced. Capable, and SPL ready. And we must have a few lined up since Daizen will be away shortly. But this is Celtic now! We’ll wait until the end of the window, the last few days, once all the decent players have already moved on, and poke about in the bargain bin for “good value” and loans nobody else would touch.
