Steve Clarke’s contract extension from the Scottish FA is music to the ears of Celtic supporters…

It was announced a few days ago that Scotland boss Steve Clarke had pledged his long-term future to his country by extending his deal beyond this summer’s World Cup.

Scotland supporters however may have their own reservations about Clarke staying put, in spite of him guiding the nation to a third major tournament in six years.

You can’t criticise Steve Clarke for his overall record

I accept that you can’t criticise the former Killie boss for his overall record, which is statistically the best ever for a Scotland manager, but his style of football and loyalty towards certain players, plus an apparent neglect of younger players is thought by some critics as denying the Scotland national team of the chance to improve the overall quality of our football for the long-term.

Steve has worked under Jose Mourinho several times in his much travelled coaching career, and it shows as his footballing philosophy is the kind that would make yer ‘eyes bleed’.

Steve Clarke had been mentioned as a contender for Celtic job

Clarke was unsurprisingly one of the names mentioned for the vacant Celtic managerial position, but thankfully the news of his new four-year deal puts that rumour firmly to bed.

I doubt he had any realistic chance of getting the Celtic job, but the mere fact that his name has been mentioned ran a shiver down all our spines. After all we play football the Glasgow Celtic way, not the Steve Clarke way which would make you think twice about investing in your season ticket.

To me he is – despite his success in reaching major finals – the proverbial football ‘dinosaur’ whose wretched tactics and footballing philosophy is ofter hard to watch. Parking the bus football worked at Kilmarnock and to a certain degree is suitable for Scotland against bigger nations but it wouldn’t be acceptable at an attack minded club like Celtic.

The one thing that Steve Clarke has in common with Celtic supporters

The only thing Steve Clarke has in common with us Celtic supporters is that he too is detested by the Rangers supporters, that’s it.  And we all know the reasons why that is.

Football-wise Steve Clark is everything Celtic isn’t, and his philosophy has no place in Paradise. So for that reason his new Scotland deal is something for Celtic supporters to welcome.

Best of luck to Steve Clarke this summer at the World Cup Finals.

I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Shorts colleagues.
