The two shared a dressing room during the early 1990s at Celtic Park, with Donnelly recalling Galloway as both a strong influence and a popular figure within the squad.

Donnelly said via TCW: “When I first broke into the first team, Mike was a really good team-mate.

“He looked out for me and he was a good player. My early memories of Mike were when he was on that European run with Hearts and kept scoring goals.

“He got his move to Celtic on the back of that. He was a big character in the dressing room.

“It’s sad to hear – 60 years of age is no age at all. My thoughts are with his family.”

The news of Galloway’s passing was confirmed by Hearts historian David Speed, who paid tribute on behalf of the Edinburgh club.

He wrote via Hearts’ club website: “It is with great sadness that Heart of Midlothian confirms the passing of our former player Mike Galloway.

“Our sincere condolences are extended to his family and friends at this sad time.”

Celtic also released a statement honouring the former midfielder, who joined the club from Hearts in 1989 and went on to make more than 170 appearances in the Hoops.

The club said: “Everyone at Celtic Park was saddened to hear of the death of former Celt, Mike Galloway who has passed away at the age of 60.

“Mike joined the club from Hearts in 1989 and the defensive midfielder with a penchant for long-range goals played in a number of positions during his time at the club.

“Ironically, his first and last games for Celtic were against his former club at Tynecastle in August 1989 and October 1994.

“Those games bookended 174 games in which he scored 10 goals for the club he had always supported.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Park are with the family and friends of Mike at this sad time.”
