Shin Yamada is set to return to Celtic this summer following the end of his loan spell with German side Preussen Munster, who have suffered relegation from the 2. Bundesliga.
The 24-year-old joined Celtic from Kawasaki Frontale last year in a £1.5 million move and was the only recognised striker signed for a fee during the summer transfer window.
Yamada struggled to make an impact during his time in Glasgow, failing to score in 11 appearances, most of which came as a substitute, before being loaned to Preussen Munster in January.
Three goals in four games at relegated Preussen Munster
The forward enjoyed an improved run of form in Germany during the closing weeks of the campaign, scoring three times in four matches, with goals against Schalke, Hannover and Darmstadt.
However, his contributions were unable to help Munster avoid the drop after a difficult season saw the club relegated to Germany’s third division.
With the loan deal now ending, Yamada is expected to report back to Celtic ahead of pre-season and remains under contract at the Hoops for another three years.
Preussen Munster boss Alois Schwartz confirmed the club’s loan signings would not be staying beyond the summer.
Speaking via The Herald, Schwartz said: “The loan players we have at the club will return to their parent clubs and we will have a squad overhaul next season.”
Yamada could join a long list at Celtic who will be facing the exit door in the summer. In the 11 matches he featured for the Hoops prior to his loan in Germany, he failed to make an impact leading to many questioning why he was signed in the first place.
