Robbie Keane has reportedly stepped down as manager of Ferencvaros, potentially clearing the way for a move to Celtic as the search for a new permanent boss continues.

According to Sky Sports, the former Republic of Ireland international has resigned from his post with the Budapest club after just 15 months in charge.

Keane has been strongly linked with the vacancy at Celtic in recent weeks and is viewed as one of the frontrunners for the position.

The ex-Hoops striker arrived at Ferencvaros in January 2025 and guided the club to the Hungarian title during his debut campaign before overseeing a second-place finish this season.

Celtic are continuing to assess managerial options ahead of the new campaign, although Keane is also believed to have attracted interest from Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava.

Elsewhere, one name has already dropped out of contention after Jens Berthel Askou departed Motherwell to take up a role with French outfit Toulouse earlier this week.

Interim manager Martin O’Neill is still under consideration and expects discussions with major shareholder Dermot Desmond in the coming days.

Speaking about the situation, O’Neill said via The Herald: “Yeah, I would expect Dermot to talk to me.

“I wouldn’t expect him to say, ‘Look, there’s a five-year deal’. If he does, that takes me up to 93! It’s whether I’d be up for the challenge again, really.

“Our club have to look at the challenges ahead. Hearts are coming and Rangers will get stronger. But you don’t get much time when the season starts. That takes a bit of doing, and it’s whether you’d have the energy to do it. Could I do it? I genuinely don’t know.”
