Maik Nawrocki has revealed his disappointment at failing to gain promotion to the Bundesliga…

Nawrocki had a successful season at Hannover 96

The Polish defender has been with Hannover 96 on a season-long loan deal in Lower-Saxony, having failed to make his mark in Paradise, after a £4.3 million move to the Glasgow giants in the summer of 2023.

The big centre-back struggled to force his way into Brendan Rodgers’ plans, barring the odd moment or two here and there, when he was called upon to come in and deputise for the regulars like Cameron Carter-Vickers or Liam Scales.

In truth, despite a good showing towards the end of the 2025 campaign up at Pittodrie, the manager, club and Maik, thought it best for a change of scenery and temporary parting of the ways to see if he could regain some form again and put himself in the shop window.

Maik and his teammates were tasked with winning promotion

The former Poland youth star did just that this past year in Germany, flourishing in a new home with very different demands and expectations. As opposed to winning titles, Maik and his teammates were tasked with just winning promotion by any means necessary.

However, that unfortunately didn’t go to plan as they missed out narrowly and now speculation is rife surrounding his future, with Hannover 96 unable to afford the pre-negotiated fee – which was covered previously on Celtic Shorts – prompting the Bhoys to double his asking price after such a strong showing in Bundesliga 2.

There is a swathe of interested clubs now in Maik’s services

There is a swathe of interested clubs now in Maik’s services, yet all the big man could think about lately is the bitter sting of defeat in his promotion quest. “Of course I would love to return, but it’s not up to me now,” the 25-year-old said, via Glasgow Times. “I could come back here, stay at Celtic, or go somewhere else entirely. Right now, I am just so disappointed we didn’t manage to win promotion for the fans because we were all convinced we would do it.”

Celtic will be hoping now for a bidding war, which could see the club recoup most or even all of the initial outlay in the deal which brought him to Glasgow from Warsaw.

Hard lines though for Maik in his endeavour to win entry to Germany’s top division. Nevertheless, I’m sure there will be plenty of other avenues for the German-born Pole to explore this close season, with options now mounting up for him and his agents.
