Liam Scales has admitted Celtic endured one of their most turbulent seasons in recent memory despite ultimately ending the campaign with Premiership and Scottish Cup success.
Despite lifting two domestic trophies, Celtic’s 2025/26 campaign was marked by instability, managerial upheaval and mounting pressure both on and off the pitch before the club eventually finished the season on a high.
From Brendan Rodgers’ departure to the brief and chaotic spell under Wilfried Nancy, Celtic endured a turbulent year that tested the squad throughout. Their final tally of 82 league points was among the club’s lowest returns in more than a decade.
Liam Scales admitted the team had contributed to some of their own difficulties during the campaign but believes the squad showed resilience when it mattered most.
“We definitely made it more difficult for ourselves at times but it’s never going to be smooth all the way through,” he said via The Herald.
“We have to get it to bounce back from all those little ups and downs, and I think we managed to do that, but I guess we’ve had it in the past, and it’ll happen again.
“It’s never going to be 100 per cent smooth, so I think everyone can learn from mistakes. Everyone’s included in that – players, coaches, board – it goes all the way up.
“The last couple of months have all gone in one direction. It’s been great for us so it gives us the chance to go into next season on a positive note but it also gives us that realisation that we need to continue to improve and continue to be at the top of our game to win things because we weren’t for stages in the season and that’s kind of put us in this difficult situation, so it’s a bit of both.
“You have that positivity in the group, and everyone’s buzzing, but then there’s also the sense that ‘Right, we need to push on again’.”
Scales first arrived at Celtic from Shamrock Rovers five years ago and initially struggled to establish himself in the first team before a loan spell at Aberdeen helped revive his prospects.
Now a regular starter with more than 150 appearances and eight trophies to his name, the Republic of Ireland defender says he sees no reason to leave Celtic.
“There’s nowhere I’d rather play,” Scales said. “I think I’ve seen people come and go, I’ve seen people maybe leave when they thought they didn’t have a future here and then come to regret it because they go to different clubs, they don’t realise how big a club it is here until they’re away from it.
“I think that’s kind of taught me that lesson that, you know, I’m happy here, and I love love it here. I love living here, I love playing for the club.”
With another title challenge, a potential treble and Champions League qualification now on the horizon, Scales is hoping the club’s recent success is only the beginning.
