Kelechi Iheanacho has admitted he would love the chance to continue his Celtic career beyond the current campaign after helping the club lift the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

The Nigerian forward came off the bench to score Celtic’s third goal in a 3-1 victory over Dunfermline Athletic, capping an impressive afternoon for the Hoops.

Speaking post-match, Iheanacho revealed how settled he feels in Glasgow and spoke warmly about the reception he has received from supporters since arriving at the club.

“I love the supporters, I love them all,” he told club Celtic TV. “Everyone in the streets of Glasgow, people recognise me. I am happy. The whole of Glasgow is a great city.

“Hopefully, I will be here next season. I am really happy to wear a Celtic shirt and to play for them with all my heart.”

The former Leicester City striker joined Celtic as a free agent after last summer’s transfer deadline and agreed a one-year contract, with the club retaining the option to extend his stay for an additional season.

Uncertainty remains over who will take charge of Celtic next season, with Martin O’Neill expected to hold discussions with principal shareholder Dermot Desmond in the coming days.

Reflecting on his own future after securing a double, O’Neill admitted no decision has yet been made. “It’ll be an interesting conversation, we’ll see,” he said.

“I would have to check my heart monitor for a start, my blood pressure would probably be up. It’s been great and the only reason it’s been great has been because we’ve been successful at the end of it all.

“I really don’t know, it’s nice today to think, oh gosh I’ll love to do that again. I really do not know whether I would have that.

“The point is that you have to win football matches, and it’s alright saying a year, and, and it sounds great today.

“Not so sure if I lost three in the first five that I’d be welcome, you know, so you have to win. It doesn’t matter who you are, you have to win the football matches, and at this minute, that’s a long way away from my thinking.”
