Former Celtic captain Scott Brown has tipped his old club to pip Hearts at the post to win the Scottish Premiership title next weekend…
Scott Brown has been speaking to Sky Sports today about the title race as the broadcaster begins its build-up to the final Glasgow Derby of the season on Sunday at Celtic Park.
Celtic has already knocked the Rangers out of both domestic cup competitions and a victory for the Hoops on Sunday will see the Rangers officially drop out of the title race and also extinguish their chances of making the Champions League play-offs.
Danny Rohl’s side went into the split as the favourites to win the title and with that would have come automatic qualification for the Champions League group stages with guaranteed earnings of around £40m – roughly the same amount as they spent in the transfer market since the new American owners arrived on the scene last summer.
Now they could end up fretting that Celtic might lose the Scottish Cup Final against Dunfermline to avoid them falling from the Europa League qualifiers into the Conference League equivalent as the price of losing to Motherwell an Hearts hits home.
None of that concerns Broony who is optimistic that Martin O’Neill can lead his side to the title with crucially two of the three remaining games at home with 60,000 Celtic fans there ready to roar the team on to title glory.
“I think Martin has done a great job and he seems to get the players to play as well as they possibly can, pressing high up the park, getting after teams,” Scott Brown told Sky Sports.
🗣️ “I still think it’s in Celtic’s hands…”

“Maeda looks like he is really interested again, he looks like he wants to score goals. In the last few games he’s been the biggest threat.
“It’s going to be very tight. Hearts were the team that everyone thought would die a death if I’m honest. But Derek (McInnes) has done a fantastic job of maintaining their levels of commitment. They beat Rangers at home, I watched the first half the other day and thought it could be two or three but he changes shape, he changes the way they go pressing…he’s done a great job.
“Nobody probably thought that they’d be able to continue that but I still think that it’s in Martin’s hands and the Celtic lads’ hand. If they can go and beat Rangers at the weekend, they’ve got Motherwell away and the last game is Hearts at home.
“I’m going along to that one so I’ll either see Derek lifting a trophy. I will congratulate him…eventually or it will be a fantastic day for Celtic and all the fans. Especially at home, it will be incredible scenes to go and get another trophy.”
Asked about the atmosphere at Celtic Park for a big game like this Sunday’s huge Glasgow Derby, the former Celtic captain was able to give an insider’s view of what it’s like out on the park playing through that incredible sound barrier coming from all angles.

“As soon as you go in the Huddle it goes wild, it really does. Whether it’s Rangers, Champions League, you can’t hear anyone. Probably whatI’m saying in the Huddle, most of the lads can’t hear me anyway, which probably affected their performance to be really good!
“But small details like being able to check your shoulder and stuff and not relying on somebody telling you you’ve got a man on. It literally is an absolutely incredible atmosphere at Celtic Park on those days. I don’t think there’s a better to go and play football when there are 60,000 fans,” Scott Brown said.
Asked about what Martin O’Neill has achieved and wha response he’d get if he can deliver the title in this turbulent season for the club, Scott Brown reckons that if he can pull it off there would a statue of him getting built right outside the stadium! Broony reckons that had Martin O’Neill stayed at the club after the sacking of Brendan Rodgers through the rest of the season that he’d probably have ‘cruised through it’ to win the title.

“He comes in, he helps out, he’s a Celtic man as well. That’s why all the fans love him as well,” Broony noted.
Asked who is going to win the league, Scott Brown didn’t sit on the fence, like Big John Hartson did in an earlier interview today. Broony’s one word answer was empathic – “CELTIC”.
