‘He needs to do more’ – Mulgrew on Celtic midfielder Arne Engels

Charlie Mulgrew believes Celtic midfielder Arne Engels has the ability to produce “world-class” quality from set-pieces, but says the Belgian must show that level more consistently.

Engels has made a significant impact since returning from injury and was one of Celtic’s standout performers in the weekend derby victory over the Ibrox club.

Former Hoops defender Mulgrew admits he is a big admirer of the midfielder’s talent, although he feels there are still frustrating inconsistencies in his game. He believes Engels’ delivery from dead-ball situations reflects his overall performances at times, capable of moments of brilliance but lacking consistency.

Speaking via The Breakdown, Mulgrew said: “I think we agree if you’re tops, you affect a game, and he did that yesterday with a great run and a pass. He needs to do it more though, doesn’t he? Where’s your assists and goals?

“I think he is world-class with set-pieces but he doesn’t do it often enough. Some games he will hit the first man every time and you’re thinking ‘you’ve got the ability to be unbelievable with set-pieces but you need to do it.

“It’s the same with everything else. Your passing’s amazing, well let’s see it. Your assists are good, let’s see them.

“He did it yesterday so he deserves credit but he needs to continue like that.”

Engels and his teammates are back in action tonight for the penultimate league game of the season.

A victory at Fir Park means Celtic will head into Saturday’s showdown with Hearts knowing that three points would secure a fifth consecutive league title.
