Calmac backed for late Scotland call-up as injury ends Billy Gilmour’s World Cup dream…
It’s perhaps only online talk, but plenty of Scotland supporters are clambering for serial winning Celtic skipper Callum McGregor to make a dramatic Scotland comeback for the upcoming World Cup campaign.
Billy Gilmour ruled out of World Cup
National boss Steve Clarke suffered a huge blow yesterday during The Scots 4-1 win over Curacao at Hampden when Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour was withdrawn with what was later revealed as a knee injury, an injury that has unfortunately ruled him out of the upcoming World Cup finals.
In hearing the huge setback, Scotland fans where quick to suggest that Clarke reaches out to the 63 times capped 26 times honour winning Celtic skipper to make a dramatic comeback to the national squad two years after he called it a day to concentrate on club football.
The Scottish mainstream media this morning are tipping Clarke to turn to Lennon Miller or Connor Barron, but the wise move would be to ask the Celtic skipper to come out of international retirement, as he is clearly a much more experienced footballer than the two aforementioned players. The Celtic captain is also a better player too.
The usual anti-Celtic suspects will scoff at the mere suggestion, simply because he plays in green and white hoops, but Callum McGregor is head and shoulders the best midfielder in Scottish football and has the winners medal to back up any argument to the contrary. Indeed over the past few weeks he’s added two more to his extensive collection.
He may be getting on a bit (in footballing terms) as he slowly approaches his 33rd birthday, but Calmac would bring not only a wealth of experience to the squad, but a much needed shot of quality in the middle of the park.
Cal has a stack of experience at the top level having sampled regular Champions League football, as well as leading Celtic to a stack of trophies, not to mention appearing in two European championships for his country.
That to many makes it a no brainer for Steve Clarke to appeal to the Celtic skipper to make a dramatic comeback. Of course Callum would have to agree, but appearing at a World Cup finals might be an offer too hard to refuse.
Ultimately the decision is Steve Clarke’s to make and we’ll find out what he decides shortly.

If Calum has any sense he will be lying beside a pool in the Caribbean with not a care on the world.
Doesn’t need all the hassle of the anti Celtic SMSM waiting for a fall.
I’m torn with this one.
On one hand, yes he’s not been near the team in a while and could easily do without the noise.
On the other hand, he deserves (as much as anybody) a chance to be on the pitch at the World Cup. Purely on merit and ability.
