Dominic McKay has declined the opportunity to go into the details over why his spell as Celtic CEO was conspicuously short…
The Scottish businessman was drafted in to lead the Celtic rebuild during the summer of 2021, when Ange Postecoglou joined the club from Yokohama F. Marinos in the aftermath of a season to forget in 2020/21.
The infamous Covid season – as it became known – left the Hoops empty handed following a dismal campaign both on and off the pitch, highlighting the disconnect between the club and its custodians.
In a tale not too dissimilar to the one we have experienced this year, the Celtic family was fractured and needed healing post-season with changes required throughout the organisation.
Peter Lawwell stepped down as Celtic CEO

Peter Lawwell had announced that he would be stepping down as CEO after a spell in the Parkhead seat that had went on too long for just about everyone.
The staleness and predictable tutelage of Lawwell had become tedious to a support that was craving more than what our domestic dominance could offer on a regular basis, itching to progress and develop on the European scene, as well as a new style of football that got the imagination racing.

Dom McKay’a arrival signalled a new approach
McKay was the man tasked with filling the big shoes Lawwell had left and things seemed to be on the up and up, after a summer transfer window that had been the most successful in years. Deals were concluded swiftly and without fuss, whilst the quality of player that had been sourced and delivered for the manager and our supporters seemed to suggest a new era had begun in Celtic’s story.
Yet, it was not to be for long.
Short but sweet, Dom’s Celtic stay lasted just 72 days
After a mere 72 days in the CEO chair, McKay left the club under a cloud of suspicion, with many citing irreconcilable differences with the Board members and majority shareholder. Nobody knows for sure however, and to this day Dominic has not come out directly and addressed those rumours and quashed the gossip and hearsay in Celtic cyberspace, surrounding his mysterious ill-fated spell at the club.
Recently, our former CEO was quizzed on the details of this departure back in 2021, but would not be drawn into the question on BBC Scotcast podcast.
“I loved my time at Celtic,” Dominic McKay
“I loved my time at Celtic,” Dominic McKay said. “I had a great summer there. We did, as a team, both on and off the field, some great work. I look back with enormous pride. It was really great to see them go on and have success, and I enjoyed that success as a fan.”
McKay, who is now in charge of the Scottish Events Campus (OVO Hydro) as CEO, was keen to stress that he did not have a clash with anyone at the time and that he didn’t want to delve any further into the subject. “It was really personal to me and it was private for me,” he added. “I’ve been really respectful about not talking about it. No, I didn’t fall out with anybody,” he said. “As I said, it was just private and personal reasons for me.”

Dominic McKay time at Celtic is a case of what might have been
Dominic McKay short time at Celtic is clearly a case of what might have been. He appeared to be a CEO who wanted to be the CEO rather than the puppet of the largest shareholder – who was still a minority shareholder. Instead we got Michael Nicholson as the Celtic CEO. Few Celtic supporters regard that as any sort of an upgrade.
All the more reason why Celtic season ticket holders should sign up to the Season Ticket Alliance to help get a say for the supporters from a Board that clearly will not listen. Details in the link below…
