Celtic boss Martin O’Neill has revealed that Tomas Cvancara’s season could be over. The Czech forward arrived in January from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach in a loan deal with an option to buy.
Speaking to the media on Friday afternoon, the legendary Irishman confirmed that Cvancara could be set to go under the knife, meaning his time in the Hoops could be over.
“He’s got a bit of a groin strain,” O’Neill said. “They’re talking about the possibility of getting it seen to now. We’ll have a look at that.
“When I say get it seen to, that might involve a small operation or something like that. But we don’t know yet at this minute. He has to go for some more tests.
“If he had the operation, then you definitely wouldn’t see him again. But I’d like the specialist to have another look at it.”
There appears to be an avenue available to have Cvancara involved again this season but it looks as if it’s subject to a specialist’s decision. Celtic appear to be relying on Daizen Maeda through the middle with Kelechi Iheanacho providing added firepower.
It was hoped that Cvancara would earn himself a deal with a fine showing in the second half of the campaign. The 25-year-old has scored twice and assisted twice since joining from Gladbach in January. Notably, Tomas netted the winning penalty in the Scottish Cup Quarter Final win over Rangers at Ibrox.
The January signings – Julian Araujo and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain aside – have failed to make an impact. It is unlikely that the player’s parent club allow him to play when he’s nursing an injury before returning to the Bundesliga this summer.

Čvančara has decent pace, hold the ball up well and links well with deft one touch passes and flicks. He just lacks the killer instinct in the box. Probably better suited to playing in a front 2 pairing than a main striker or winger – he’s almost a hybrid of both.
With Maeda 99% leaving and the Board setting a ridiculously low fee to let go of Jonny Kenny, we need to find a real goal scorer for next year to play in front of Iheanacho, and it won’t be Čvančara.
