Charlie Mulgrew tells Barry Ferguson that his nephew Lewis should join the Scottish champions if he wanted a return to Scotland.

Ferguson has been tipped for a potential summer transfer after speculation intensified over the Bologna midfielder’s future following an inconsistent season in Serie A.

The Scotland international – who comes from a family with deep Ibrox connections through father Derek and uncle Barry Ferguson – has long been linked with a move to Ibrox.

Agent Bill McMurdo recently suggested Ferguson would be interested in exploring opportunities in another major European league, although a switch to Ibrox would also appeal to the 26-year-old.

Barry Ferguson believes his nephew would strengthen Danny Rohl’s squad immediately and urged the Ibrox club to target more established Scottish talent after ending the season without silverware.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson said: “He’s the type of profile that you would want. Scottish, very good player. He’s been in and out of the Bologna team. Why would you not try and look at doing something?

“But listen, it won’t just be Rangers that will be interested. There will be a number of clubs monitoring and seeing that he’s not playing week in week out. He’s going to a World Cup as well. You never know.”

Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew then jokingly suggested the midfielder should consider crossing the Glasgow divide and joining the Scottish champions instead.

Asked whether Celtic should pursue Ferguson, Mulgrew replied: “Yeah, definitely. I just don’t know… if he had the choice of Celtic and Rangers, you know who he’s going to choose there, obviously being a Rangers fan, l’d imagine.”

Barry Ferguson laughed off the suggestion while praising his nephew’s development in Italy.

“He knows I’ll not be talking to him again! See at the end of the day, you just want to see him do really well. He’s done brilliantly so far in his career.

“This season has been a bit strange. The Bologna manager changes his team quite a lot and Lewis has been in and out. If you asked Lewis himself, he’d want to be regularly.”

Mulgrew continued the light-hearted exchange by hinting Ferguson might be better suited joining the current Premiership champions.

“So, as your nephew, would you think the better move would be to go to the champions?”

Barry Ferguson quickly dismissed the idea, insisting there was only one destination his nephew would seriously consider in Scotland.

“There’s only one move. He’d want to move to the bigger club and that’s obviously Rangers.”

Mulgrew had the final say as he referenced Celtic’s record number of league titles, joking: “Get those titles counted!”
