Celtic have moved to within one championship of matching the world record for the most domestic league titles won by any club.

The Scottish champions secured their 56th league title with a thrilling 3-1 victory over Hearts, as goals from Arne Engels, Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand sealed the Premiership title.

Should Celtic retain the trophy next season, they would pull level with Belfast side Linfield on 57 league championships – provided the Northern Irish club fail to add another NIFL Premiership title to their tally.

No other team globally has reached those numbers. Uruguayan heavyweights Peñarol and Nacional sit behind on 52 and 50 league titles respectively, while Greek giants Olympiacos, Paraguay’s Olimpia Asunción, Honduran side Olimpia Tegucigalpa and Egyptian side Al Ahly also rank among the most decorated clubs in domestic football history.

Celtic’s first league triumph arrived back in 1893, only six years after the club was formed. They edged Rangers by a single point in an 18-match campaign, clinching the championship with a 3-1 victory over Leith Athletic.

That season also played a significant role in Scottish football history. Weeks before sealing the title, Celtic lodged a formal complaint with the Scottish Football Association after losing the Scottish Cup final to Queen’s Park, arguing that a decisive goal had passed outside the post.

The controversy ultimately prompted the introduction of goal nets in Scottish Cup matches — a change that would later become standard across the game.

Nice to know, and adds a bit more motivation for next season also.
But for now, happy enough to sit in the glory of earning 55 more than the blue half of Glasgow.
Even that has a satisfactory tone to it, within itself at present imo?

This only adds to the motivation for the Scottish government, media and bigots to do all in their power to see what can be done to apply the brakes on the train for this locomotive from Paradise!
What other motivation do they need? To the bigots and anti-Celtic, anti-Irish Catholic movement still proudly and largely operating in biased old fashioned Scotland, this is MORE motivation than they could hope for!
Far too many Scots, especially those in positions of power, seemingly actually EDUCATED people, still live in the dark ages and have no interest in trying to get out!
These are the rocket scientists who BRAVELY cover their faces as the attack celebrating fans while throwing lighted flares into them, innocent men, women and children! Only celebrating a victory. But these neanderthals thought it was ok to “light them up”
      This is the EDUCATED ones!
