Celtic loanee Julian Araujo is poised for a major summer breakthrough after sealing a Scottish Premiership winners’ medal and moving back into Mexico’s World Cup plans…
The 24-year-old defender returned to parent club Bournemouth earlier this spring to continue rehab on a thigh problem after Celtic manager Martin O’Neill ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign.
Fears had grown that the injury would end Araujo’s hopes of featuring at the World Cup, but the Mexican international remained determined to force his way back into contention.
Araujo travelled to Mexico to undergo intensive recovery work at the Mexican FA’s High Performance Centre, targeting a place in Javier Aguirre’s final squad for the tournament.
Despite his injury setbacks, the full-back still did enough during his loan spell to qualify for a league winner’s medal after making 10 Premiership appearances for the champions.
Reports in Mexico now suggest Araujo has successfully proved his fitness and is expected to be named in Aguirre’s squad later this month.
The defender is due to link up with the national side ahead of the tournament, where co-hosts Mexico are scheduled to face South Africa, South Korea and the Czech Republic in the group stage.
